As the name suggests, databases are used to store data. This data can be anything from personal information or preferences to sales statistics collected by merchants. Whatever the case, this data needs to be captured into a database and analyzed to help businesses derive insights and find value in the data they collect.  This is where database management programming languages such as Structured Query Language (SQL) come in.

SQL is the most popular database management language in the world, and it is used to organise and manipulate data within databases and communicate with Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS), such as those offered by Microsoft and Oracle. Therefore, this course will teach you SQL, in addition to using PHP to provide an interface to an SQL database.

Businesses such as Microsoft, UNICEF and Netflix use SQL to effectively manage their data sets and pull relevant information. This information has become one of the key ingredients in successful marketing and business planning to the extent that a basic understanding of SQL is considered a great employable skill, not only for data scientists, but for almost everyone.

Some of the more popular SQL based jobs are database developer, database administrator and technical operations specialist. As your SQL skills improve, the opportunities just increase, especially in this data-driven age.  Furthermore, the ability to use PHP to design interfaces to your databases will prove to be invaluable.

The purpose of this course is to teach you how to use the SQL language to create, modify, query, and manage a database application. In addition, we teach you how to build a web application using PHP that provides an interface to a database, as well as offering discussions on advanced programming concepts, such as Arrays and Object-Oriented Programming (OOP). The course is organised into five central themes:

► Introduction to databases

► Use SQL to define a relational database environment, and manipulate data in it, as well as query a database

► Getting started with PHP

► Intermediate PHP concepts, such as arrays and object-oriented programming

► Advanced concepts, such as modelling objects, attributes, and relationships, working with multi-table databases and user accounts

Once you have completed this course you will be ready to delve in web development or data science. Businesses are placing larger value on data driven decisions, therefore the ability to manipulate and understand data is becoming more and more valuable. In each of these courses, you will learn how to interpret data, make data driven business decisions and manipulate & mine data, and build complex web applications.
